How will you be spending Christmas and New Year this year? We celebrate a German Christmas – that is presents on the eve of 24th December. Children and grandchildren and extended family will come to my house. New Year I try to ignore other than listening to the New Year’s concert from Vienna. Back in 1999 Derek and I went there and it was great fun. Is Brexit likely to be a topic of conversation over Christmas dinner? One of my sons may bring it up – he usually tells me to “get a move on with it”. What is your favourite memory of the referendum campaign? When I first came to the UK I worked in Manchester. I’d never have thought I’d end up in the Town Hall 42 years later as Chair of Vote Leave speaking on behalf of over 17 million voters. On a more personal note, I shall never forget the BBC Wembley debate. I can now tell my grandchildren that I “once did Wembley”. What do you think was the most significant moment of 2017? The overwhelming vote by Parliament to trigger Article 50. Whether it be a traditional carol or a festive chart hit, what is your favourite piece of Christmas music? As a proper Christmas song, it has to be Silent Night. As a song, with energy and dynamics (and as long as small children don’t listen to the words too carefully) The Pogues’ Fairytale of New York. Complete the phrase: “Brexit means… Taking back Control! Have you any (political or personal) New Year’s resolutions? Stay positive and remember that there is a big wide world north of the M25.
