The Government has been defeated after the House of Commons voted in favour of former Attorney General Dominic Grieve’s Amendment 7 to the European Union (Withdrawal) Bill – to amend Clause 9 of the Bill to require the final Brexit deal with the EU to be approved by statute passed by Parliament – by a majority of just 4. 309 MPs voted for the Amendment (311 if you include the two tellers), including 12 Conservatives who defied the whip to oppose it (including one, John Stevenson, who also voted against it as a way of registering a deliberate abstention), 247 Labour MPs, 34 SNP MPs, 12 Lib Dem MPs, along with 4 MPs from Plaid Cymru, the Green MP and one Independent. Meanwhile, 305 MPs voted against the Amendment (307 including two tellers), including 295 Conservatives (including John Stevenson who also registered that vote against), 2 Labour MPs (disobeying their whip to back the Amendment) and all 10 DUP MPs. Below are full lists of which MPs voted for and against the Amendment, along with those who did not vote at all (although NB it is impossible to know whether they deliberately abstained, were away from Westminster on parliamentary business elsewhere or were ill etc.). Also excluded are the four further MPs who have been chairing proceedings of the Committee Stage, namely David Amess (Con), David Crausby (Lab), David Hanson (Lab) and Gary Streeter (Con). NB: Absence from the division may be for a number of reasons, such as being ill, on maternity leave or on parliamentary business elsewhere, as well as a deliberate abstention.
