Boris Johnson ‘fighting for every vote’ as parties complete final campaign frenzy…

Boris Johnson has hinted the Tories may not be as safe as first thought in tomorrow’s election, as he said he is “fighting for every vote” in the final day of campaigning. At a rally in the Olympic Park in East London, the Prime Minister said on Wednesday evening: “We know we can’t trust the polls. So fan out from this great athletic venue that I helped to deliver on time and on budget, let’s go forward from this place and make that final sprint towards a golden future for this country.” Mr Johnson warned the general election is “on a knife edge” as the Telegraph’s final poll of the campaign shows that the Conservatives’ lead has shrunk to just five per cent. – Telegraph (£)

…with the PM warning of the risk to Brexit of a hung parliament…

Boris Johnson has warned that the risk of a hung parliament is “very real” as Labour, the Tories and Liberal Democrats scrambled to shore up support as polls suggested that the race for No 10 was tightening. The prime minister today launched a final assault on Labour’s heartlands as modelling showed that he can no longer be sure of securing a majority in the election. Jeremy Corbyn, the Labour leader, is making five campaign visits on his way from Glasgow to London. He insisted Labour would still win the election “no problem at all” despite polls suggesting that Britain is on course for a hung parliament or Tory majority. – The Times (£)

…and setting out how Brexit Party votes could help Jeremy Corbyn reach Number 10 by stopping the Tories winning key seats…

Boris Johnson has warned that every vote for the Brexit Party increases the chances of handing power to Jeremy Corbyn. The Prime Minister called the prospect of handing the keys to Number 10 to the leftie Labour leader a “terrifying prospect.” This comes as new YouGov data has revealed that Nigel Farage’s Brexit Party could stop the Tories from taking 16 marginal Leave constituencies. And Mr Johnson – who needs 320 seats for a majority in Parliament – also appealed against voting for the Lib Dems ahead of the Thursday’s snap election. He told The Times: “Every single vote for the Brexit Party or the Liberal Democrats means the terrifying prospect of Jeremy Corbyn moving into Downing Street becomes more likely — condemning the country to more gridlock, more division, more uncertainty and our economy taken back to square one.” – The Sun

…with analysis showing there are 49 seats where the Brexit Party could split the Leave vote and risk a hung parliament

The Telegraph has identified nearly 50 seats where the Brexit Party appears to be blocking a potential Tory victory, piling further pressure on Nigel Farage to stand candidates down after pollsters refused to rule out a hung parliament on Thursday. The Brexit Party leader is already facing calls to put country before party after two of his prospective MPs stood down in Lincoln and Redcar – which are both on the list of viable Tory targets – to make way for the Conservatives. Today, Brexit Party founder Catherine Blaiklock has revealed she is voting Tory and has described Mr Farage’s strategy as a “disaster,” saying: “Nigel has failed catastrophically, because you’re not going to get a WTO Brexit. You have to compromise … If you want Brexit, you must vote Tory now.” It came after Reece Wilkes stood down in Lincoln and Jacqui Cummins said she would no longer be “actively contesting” Redcar. – Telegraph (£)

Ex-Brexit Party MEP Lance Forman savages Nigel Farage for putting Brexit at risk

Lance Forman has revealed the one key flaw in the Brexit Party’s campaign as polls predict a disappointing election result for Nigel Farage. Mr Forman announced his resignation from the party last week, spoke of his fear that they could not only split the Leave vote but risk putting Jeremy Corbyn in power. Speaking to Express.co.uk, Mr Forman also revealed how the series of errors the Brexit Party has made including the decision to reduce the candidate list and Mr Farage not even running in the election. – Express

Jo Swinson stands by her promise to cancel Brexit…

Britain’s only political party pledging to cancel Brexit if it wins power on December 12 is “just being honest,” its leader said. Jo Swinson, whose Liberal Democrats have gone into reverse in the polls since the UK’s general election was called, admitted the opportunity for a “seismic change” in British politics, which many predicted earlier in the year, had “moved on for the immediate moment.” Activists have raised concerns about the party’s controversial decision to pledge to halt the process of pulling Britain out of the European Union without a second referendum, a policy which many say has gone down badly with voters. – Politico

…as a second Lib Dem candidate endorses their Labour rival on the day before the election

Liberal Democrat Rhys Taylor in Cardiff North has become the second of his party’s general election candidates to advise supporters to vote tactically for their Labour rival to defeat Conservatives. Mr Taylor followed Brendan Devlin in Stockton South, who this morning effectively endorsed his Labour rival in a key marginal seat in the North-East. At this late stage in the campaign, it is not possible for candidates’ names to be removed from the ballot paper or for voters to be stopped from marking their X by their names. But it is thought that advice from candidates to vote tactically could produce a potentially decisive shift in votes. – Independent

Brexit will not get done by 2021, suggests Michel Barnier in leaked recording…

Brexit trade negotiations cannot be finished in the timeframe claimed by Boris Johnson, the EU’s chief negotiator has privately admitted – blowing a hole in the prime minister’s big election promise to “get Brexit done”. In a leaked recording obtained by The Independent, Michel Barnier tells a private meeting that the UK’s 11-month timetable to wrap up trade talks by 2021 is “unrealistic” and suggests negotiations will drag on until long after the end of next year. “With regards to this agreement, we will not get everything done in 11 months. We will do all we can – we won’t do it all,” Mr Barnier can be heard telling a group of senior MEPs at the closed meeting in the EU capital this week. – Independent

…although the German Government say a ‘standard’ EU-UK trade deal can be done in 2020

Germany is optimistic that the EU and UK can negotiate a limited free-trade agreement by the end of 2020, as long as both sides stick to a standard template, a senior government official said today. “We have already shown that you can negotiate a lot in a short time if you set yourself clear goals,” the official told reporters during a briefing in Berlin. UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson has ruled out asking for an extension of the standstill transition period that is due to follow the UK’s mooted EU exit date of January 31 — giving negotiators until December 2020 to reach a trade deal. – Politico

The Sun: If Boris Johnson wins today, a bright future begins… but if Jeremy Corbyn does, the lights will go out for good

Sun readers must help save Brexit, and Britain, from the horror of a Corbyn-led Marxist Government. It is vital you go out, whatever the weather, and vote Tory. You may never have done so before. But it has NEVER been more important. The stakes have never been this high. You can back Boris Johnson — who makes a direct plea to Sun readers — to secure Brexit by January 31 and steer us into a bright new decade as a prosperous and independent nation outside the EU. If you don’t, or if you stay at home, you risk handing power to Jeremy Corbyn’s extremists, who will reverse Brexit and return us to the industrial carnage of the bleak 1970s which his union paymasters consider a golden age. – The Sun

Asa Bennett: Leavers, don’t waste your vote on the Brexit Party. Only the Tories can beat the Remainers

The British people will tomorrow vote in a new Parliament that Boris Johnson hopes will allow him to get Brexit done, but a fair few Leave voters may still be making up their minds all the way into the polling booth. Lord Ashcroft’s last pre-election survey shows in recent days that just over a third of Tory Leave voters had not definitely decided how they will vote, with far more (41 per cent) Labour Leavers feeling the same indecision. Those Labour Eurosceptics have been front and centre of Nigel Farage’s electoral pitch, as he has argued that there are around 130 seats that had not elected a Tory in living memory, making his party the best alternative for them. “Leavers, don’t waste your vote,” the Brexit Party leader has warned, publishing a list of the seats he had in mind where those who wanted to get Labour out should vote for his candidates, not the Tories. But the sad truth for Mr Farage is that the best advice for Leavers is to do precisely the opposite. – Asa Bennett for the Telegraph (£)

Lord Ashcroft: The limits of tactical voting – why all Brexiteers should vote Conservative tomorrow

A funny thing about elections is that people’s expectations of what the result will be can affect what the result actually is. There have been hints of this in my polling over the course of the election campaign. The survey I published yesterday found more people expecting a Conservative victory than was the case last month. At the same time, enthusiasm for switching to the Tories among some critical voters – the things that makes such a result possible – has diminished. There could be several reasons for this. But one might be that with Boris Johnson apparently safely on course for a majority, some may feel they don’t need to sully themselves with a Conservative vote. – Lord Ashcroft for ConservativeHome

Howard Shore: If Boris wins a majority, prepare for the British economy to boom

Analysts trying to predict the UK’s economic outlook for 2020 face two huge unknowns: the outcome of the General Election and whether our current Brexit paralysis continues or comes to an end in January. The economic possibilities resulting from these two unknowns range from the UK being on course to have one of the fastest growing economies in the G7 in 2021, to us having a severe recession. If, as I expect, the General Election delivers a majority for Boris Johnson, this will produce a huge boost for the UK economy in 2020, because it will provide businesses with clarity and remove the economic uncertainty which has beset us thanks to the double-whammy of a sclerotic hung parliament and the threat of a Jeremy Corbyn-led government. – Howard Shore for the Telegraph (£)

Allister Heath: This is our last chance to save Brexit – and even democracy itself

In just 20 days’ time, the 2020s will be upon us, but this grotesque election has a veritable fin-de-siècle feeling about it. The air is dark with menace, fear and loathing, the atmosphere tenser even than before the referendum, an exercise which most of us now realise was merely a dry run for today’s final showdown. This election is in fact a second referendum, but it’s a plebiscite not just on the EU but also on democracy and capitalism. The stakes keep getting higher. Calling it was necessary, given the implosion of the previous Parliament, but it was also the political equivalent of a game of Russian roulette: the gulf between the parties is greater even than it was in 1945, 1979 or 1983. – Allister Heath for the Telegraph (£)

Mark Francois: Boris Johnson is the Love Actually politician: a plucky optimist who stands up for Britain

Love Actually, Richard Curtis’ classic 2003 movie about the lives and loves of a range of characters in the run up to Christmas, has become a British icon.  It’s featured in a range of internet memes down the years; Comic Relief arranged a “reunion” of some of the main characters, which was the highlight of their fundraising efforts several years ago and, the movie was on TV on Tuesday. The Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, has mimicked a famous scene in his latest party political broadcast.  In the original, Andrew Lincoln knocks on Keira Knightley’s door and then presents a number of cards, declaring his secret love for her. This has been transposed into Boris knocking on the door of a floating voter and presenting her with a number of cards outlining the risk of a Corbyn Government and urging her to vote Conservative and “Get Brexit Done”.  As in the original scene, Boris ends with the words “Enough…Enough” and then urges the viewer “Let’s get this Done”. – Mark Francois for the Telegraph (£)
