Theresa May gave us an inspiring vision of a global Britain

Matthew Elliott, who was Chief Executive of the Vote Leave campaign and is now Editor-at-Large of BrexitCentral, welcomed Theresa May’s speech outlining her objectives for the Brexit negotiations.

He said:

“Today Theresa May delivered exactly the vision of an outward -looking, global-facing, trading nation that we at Vote Leave promoted throughout the referendum campaign. We always highlighted the importance of maintaining good relations with our European neighbours after Brexit and it was reassuring to hear the Prime Minister underlining the areas such as dealing with terrorism and collaborating on scientific research where we will continue to co-operate in the years and decades to come.

“But it was equally important that she emphasised that the Leave vote was about taking back control of our laws, our money and our borders and the explicit conformation that we will rescind our membership of the single market was most welcome. I was also delighted to hear her explicitly say that no deal would be better than a bad deal since that negotiating position maximises the chances of securing the best possible trading arrangements post-Brexit.

“She painted an inspiring vision of a global Britain with which only the most recalcitrant Remain supporter could disagree. I hope that those who have been thus far reluctant to accept the referendum result will now get behind this optimistic vision as the Prime Minister prepares to go in to bat for Britain.”
