Every government department given Brexit minister

Every government department now has a Brexit minister and a senior civil servant to oversee Brexit legislation.

The Leader of the House of Commons said it demonstrated the government was ‘cranking up a gear’ when it came to Brexit, telling a Commons Committee she hoped people would notice the difference.

Greg Hands, in the Trade department and John Hayes in the Department for Transport had been given extra responsibilities in their departments for dealing with Secondary legislation required for Brexit.

But Andrea Leadsom told the Commons Procedure Committee that each government department would have a minister responsible for Brexit legislation.

She told the Committee: “We are trying to improve and upgrade the management of secondary legislation including appointing a minister responsible for Secondary legislation in each department and a senior civil servant whose job will be to oversee [Brexit legislation].

“[With this] we can make sure that parliament gets better notification of the volume and type of legislation that’s coming forward.”

“We are really cranking up a gear and I do hope that this committee and others will notice the difference.

“I do think the management is going to be significantly better than it has been in the past.”
